Red Bull driver Max Verstappen shared his expectations for the new Formula 1 season and the confrontation with Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.
“How often do I remember that race in Abu Dhabi? Sometimes. But that week turned out to be so chaotic that these are not always pleasant memories, sometimes the tension returns. I don’t have nightmares, but I like to remember the moments when it was all over.
There was a lot of talk about that race, but the title is won at the end of the whole season. I think I fully deserve the championship. Perhaps someone watched only the last race and considers that I was lucky. But under normal circumstances, I would have become a champion long before that. I lost a lot of points twice: when I was knocked out by another car, and when my tire exploded in Baku. Because of these failures, everything was decided in the last race.
I understand the disappointment of Hamilton, if you look at how things turned out in the last race. But, as I said, you need to look at the season as a whole. You can’t win a title with just one race. Did we communicate with Lewis in the winter? No, there was no reason for it. We didn’t talk or see each other. It’s okay, we’re both racers. We are looking forward to a new battle, ”De Telegraaf quotes Verstappen as saying.
At the end of the 2021 season, Verstappen won the Formula 1 championship title for the first time in his career. The fate of the championship was decided on the last lap of the last race of the season, when the Dutchman overtook Lewis Hamilton.
