US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee demanded the release of American basketball player Brittney Griner, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the New York Post.
“We know she had issues with vape cartridges and other items, but I want to clear things up. She is a US citizen and she was a guest in Russia. I will demand her release,” Jackson Lee said.
On March 5, it became known that Brittney Greiner was detained by the customs service of Sheremetyevo Airport in February 2022. Airport staff found drugs in her luggage. A criminal case was opened against Greiner under the article “Smuggling of drugs in a significant amount”, which provides for imprisonment for a term of 5 to 10 years.
Greiner has been playing for the UMMC team from Yekaterinburg since 2015. As part of the US team, she became a two-time Olympic champion.
